Based on the scandalous 1959 novel by Emmanuelle Arsan that was long-rumored to be at least semi-autobiographical, 1974's controversial EMMANUELLE was a groundbreaking, X-rated deep-dive into post-LAST TANGO IN PARIS softcore erotica, focused on the intense sexual awakening of a beautiful and sexually-gifted but naive young woman, Emmanuelle (Sylvia Kristel). With EMMANUELLE being such a worldwide box-office smash hit, a sequel was inevitable and Kristel returned for EMMANUELLE 2 (1975), better known by its eventual US title EMMANUELLE: THE JOYS OF A WOMAN. Kristel returned to her signature role again for the final film in the original trilogy. 1977's GOODBYE EMMANUELLE picks up two years after the events in EMMANUELLE 2 and this time we are in beautiful Seychelles island of La Digue, and Emmanuelle and her husband Jean are still up to their old tricks. There are plenty of couplings happening during the film, but somehow the steam has been let out of the engine as the action seems rather mechanical and lifeless. Emmanuelle seems somewhat distant and otherwise uninvolved. This may pass for the character having matured and finally decides to listen to her heart instead of the nattering of her husband and his pals. As the story wanders along, we are presented with some very beautiful shots of the coast and the beaches; the cinematography is very effective and the locations look amazing. In the end, Emmanuelle wises up and leaves her husband.
